Q:
How to change the Oil Filter for Oldsmobile Cutlass? Posted by Customer
A:
Frequent oil changes are recommended as the best form of preventative maintenance for home mechanics. As engine oil ages, it becomes diluted and contaminated, leading to premature parts wear. It is recommended to change the oil filter every time the oil is changed, as it is a relatively inexpensive and easy task. The tools needed for an oil and filter change include a wrench for the drain plug, an oil filter wrench, a container for draining the old oil, and a funnel or oil can spout for pouring in fresh oil. Clean rags and newspapers should be kept on hand to clean up any spills. It is important to have proper support for the car when working underneath it. Before starting the oil change, it is a good idea to familiarize yourself with the location of the drain plug and oil filter. Once the car is warmed up, raise it for access underneath and position the drain pan under the drain plug. Use a wrench to remove the drain plug, allowing the old oil to drain into the pan. Clean the drain plug and the area around it before reinstalling it securely. Move the drain pan under the oil filter and use a filter wrench to loosen and remove the old filter. Compare the old filter with the new one to ensure they are the same type. Clean the area where the new filter will be mounted and make sure the old rubber gasket is not stuck to the engine. Fill the new filter with fresh oil and apply a light coat of oil to the rubber gasket. Screw the new filter onto the engine following the manufacturer's instructions. Remove all tools and lower the car. In the engine compartment, locate the oil filler cap and pour the fresh oil into the engine. Start with a small amount and check the oil level on the dipstick. If necessary, add more oil to bring it to the "Full" mark. After running the engine for a minute, check for leaks and recheck the oil level. During the first few trips after the oil change, continue to check for leaks and monitor the oil level. The old oil should be disposed of properly at an oil reclamation center, auto repair shop, or gas station.
