- A:Lifters should be assembled as follows: Coat all lifter parts with a coating of clean kerosene or diesel fuel. Assemble the ball check, spring, and retainer into the plunger. Install the plunger spring over the check retainer. Hold the plunger with the spring up and insert it into the lifter body, ensuring that the plunger is held vertically to prevent spring cocking. Submerge the lifter in clean kerosene or diesel fuel. Install the oil metering valve and pushrod seat into the lifter and install the retaining ring.
