Q:
Can the starter motor and solenoid assembly be repaired using separate components? Posted by Customer
A:
The starter and solenoid assembly cannot be repaired using separate components. In the event of failure, exchange the starter/solenoid assembly for a new or rebuilt complete unit. First, disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Then, raise the vehicle and support it securely on jack stands. Next, remove the splash shield from under the engine. After that, disconnect the electrical connector from the starter solenoid, then remove the nut and disconnect the battery cable from the solenoid, too. Following this, remove the starter mounting bolts and remove the starter from the vehicle. Finally, installation is the reverse of removal.

Q:
How to diagnose starter problems? Posted by Customer
A:
Before diagnosing starter problems, ensure the battery is fully charged. In case of a starting circuit malfunction, do not immediately assume the starter is the culprit. Begin by checking various components:Ensure the battery cable clamps are clean and securely attached to the battery.Inspect the battery cables for their condition and replace any faulty ones.Test the battery's condition and replace it if it fails any tests.Examine the starter solenoid wiring and connections.Confirm the starter mounting bolts are tightened.Check the fusible links near the positive battery terminal and repair any burned ones, also assess the ignition switch circuit's operation.Verify the transmission range sensor (automatic transaxle) or clutch start switch (manual transaxle) are functioning correctly, considering the shift lever's position. If the starter fails to engage when the ignition switch is turned to the start position, inspect for battery voltage at the solenoid's positive terminal to determine if the solenoid is receiving the correct voltage signal from the ignition switch. If voltage is absent, check all fuses and relays in the starting system circuit. If voltage is present but the starter doesn't operate, remove and bench test the starter. If the starter cranks slowly, assess the starter cranking voltage and current drawn from the battery, ensuring the values are within specified ranges. If not, replace the starter. It's important to have a good battery, appropriate for the application, with clean terminals and cables. Also, consider warming the battery or engine block in extremely cold temperatures before testing. Finally, if the starter receives voltage but doesn't engage, remove and bench test the starter/solenoid assembly, and replace the defective component if necessary. If the engine is seized, attempt to rotate the crankshaft pulley before proceeding. In the bench test, apply battery voltage to the solenoid S terminal to check the solenoid's operation and the starter's functionality.
