1984 Chevrolet Caprice Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to adjust the choke in Rochester 2GV Carburetor on 1984 Chevrolet Caprice?
A: For pre-1972 models, start with the air cleaner both, and then seal the take-off for the air cleaner sensor vacuum on the carburetor. Switch on the engine or put you mouth over the other end of the diaphragm vacuum tube then pull out the choke rod from lever; tighten a rubber band around the choke to close it slightly. Slowly advance the accelerator until the movement of the choke is stopped by vacuum break link as much as possible, and the idle speed is set by a high step of the fast idle cam and then, let go of accelerator. Place a piece of metal of the required thickness between the air horn and the choke blade; then, by screwing the rod or tang the required dimension is obtained. If it is 1972 model or later then, first, you have to remove the air cleaner and then plug the air cleaner sensor vacuum take-off port available in the carburetor. Some units have built-in vacuum break diaphragm; others have a separate vacuum break diaphragm that must be secured to the unit and connected to an external suction source to apply vacuum to the vacuum break diaphragm while forcing the plunger fully downward. With the diaphragm seated as far down as possible, advance the choke valve toward the closed end and insert a thickness gauge of the specification between the air horn and the choke blade, bending the vacuum break rod, if required to give the required dimension.
