1987 Pontiac Fiero Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install a rear shock absorber on 1987 Pontiac Fiero?
A: If strut damper assemblies do not achieve their end of useful life at the same time, it is recommended to change both left and right struts because of the handling problems and abnormal ride comfort. Initially, the rear wheel lug nuts should be loosened, though not removed; the rear of the vehicle should then be raised and steadied on jackstands, after which the rear wheel is to be removed. Jack the lower control arm from under the car but do not compress the spring, then, remove the three nuts with washers inside the engine compartment which attach the top of the strut to the car body. Pull the brake hose clip off from the strut and mark both the strut and the knuckle so that when reinstalling the camber is correct. Subsequently, unscrew the strut mounting nuts and bolts and if needed lower the jack to get of the strut mounting and spacer plate. For installation, place the strut assembly and spacer plate and if necessary, raise the control arm up with the floor jack so that the holes in the knuckle line with the holes in the strut bracket to put the mounting bolts in with the nuts hand-tightened. First, position the scribe marks on the strut bracket and knuckle appropriately then tighten up the strut mounting bolts to the recommended torque. Next place the brake hose clip and fasten the clip mounting bolt and then do the tire and wheel assembly. Lower the vehicle and torque the wheel lug nuts, then install the three upper strut washers and nuts and torque them also. It is suggested if the strut damper has been changed, then it should be driven to a dealer or an alignment center for the adjustment of the camber and toe in of the rear wheels.
