1988 Chevrolet Nova Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to properly remove and reinstall a distributor on 1988 Chevrolet Nova?
A: After disconnecting the negative battery terminal cable, unplug the primary lead from the coil and detach all electrical leads from the distributor by tracing the wires from it. Look for a raised "1" on the distributor cap to identify the number one cylinder spark plug wire terminal; if absent, locate the number one spark plug and trace the wire back to its corresponding terminal on the cap. Remove the distributor cap and turn the engine over until the rotor points toward the number one spark plug terminal. Mark the edge of the distributor base directly below the rotor tip and in line with it, and also mark the distributor base and the engine block for correct installation. Remove the distributor hold-down bolt and clamp, then pull the distributor straight up, taking care not to disturb the intermediate driveshaft, and avoid turning the engine while the distributor is removed to maintain alignment marks. If the crankshaft has moved during removal, locate Top Dead Center (TDC) for the number one piston and position the distributor and rotor accordingly. Insert the distributor into the engine in the same relationship to the block as when it was removed, and if necessary, turn the rotor slightly to mesh the helical gears on the camshaft and distributor. Ensure the distributor seats completely and check the alignment marks between the distributor base and the block, as well as the rotor alignment with the mark made on the distributor base. Place the hold-down clamp in position and loosely install the bolt, then install the distributor cap and tighten the cap screws securely. Plug in the module electrical connector, reattach the spark plug wires to the plugs if removed, connect the cable to the negative terminal of the battery, and check the ignition timing before tightening the distributor hold-down bolt securely.
