- Q: How to Remove and Install Rear Brake Calipers on 1989 Pontiac Firebird?A: When doing work on the brake system, one should be conversant with asbestos dust that is dangerous to health. First, open the cap of the brake fluid container and then taking a bucket or any easy disposable container, empty about 2/3 rd of the brake fluid container. Jack up the rear of the vehicle until it is noticeably off the ground and then pull back on the handle of the parking brake. Take off the wheel and put back one lug of the wheel just to secure the rotor, when dealing with one brake assembly at a time. On vehicles from 1988 and earlier the parking brake cable tension must be reduced, the cable, damper, spring removed from the lever and the lever kept in position to remove nut and the lever assembly from the caliper actuator screw. Mount a C-clamp on the top end of the caliper housing to force down the piston a little squeezing the actuator screw between your hand and this C-clamp after the piston has reached its lowest position remove the C-clamp. Replace the lever assembly, then unscrew the brake line nut, so that we can disconnect the brake line, and cover the ports with plugs to reduce the loss of the fluids. The caliper mounting bolts and the caliper have to be taken out and then replaced in the reverse sequence after fitting new seals and lubricating. For engines of the year 1989 and later, similar procedure is to be followed to slacken the parking brake cable, disconnect the brake hose and to un-bolt the caliper using guide pin bolts. Reinstalled in backward order possible to make usage of a new washer for the brake hose fitting, connected the parking brake cable, and adjust. Last of all, fill the Master cylinder and bleed off the hydraulic system.
