1990 Chevrolet Metro Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to inspect, remove, and install a one-piece crankshaft seal on 1990 Chevrolet Metro?
A: All models employ a single-piece seal having a lip that fits at a housing to be joined to the block; this generally demands prepositioning of the crankshaft followed by engaging the main bearing caps in order to fix the new Crankshaft Seal in the housing before engaging the housing into the block. Before this, the seal contact surface needs to be surveyed on its scratches and nicks that can cause new seal lip damages and oil leakage; if the crankshaft is problematic, a new/separate crankshaft is needed. They include; The old seal can be removed using a hammer and punch by tapping from the back side of the housing as the housing is supported on wooden blocks, observing the depth of recess of the seal in the housing bore to ensure the new Crankshaft Seal has the same depth so as not to harm the bore and develop oil leaks. The housing should be cleaned and a very thin layer of engine oil to cover the new section should be applied to the outer lip of the new Crankshaft Seal. The seal must be pressed into the housing bore, if a press is not available then the seal can be put into the bore using a hammer and block of wood but ensure the seal enters squarely without cocking. The lips of the seal should be coated with multi-purpose grease or engine assembly lube before the seal and its housing are put over the crankshaft and tightened to the block using a new gasket which does not require sealant, and proper position of the dowel pins should be checked before installation. Lastly, the torque on the screws should be tightened in increment till the required torque is reached on the wrench.
