  • Q: How to replace the rear crankshaft seal on 1991 Chevrolet Metro?
    A: To perform this operations the trans axle has to be detached from the car. Replacing the seal may be done without having to remove the oil pan or the seal housing; though not advised since, generally, the seal lip is rather stiff and can cause misalignment or even breakage when being installed. If you decided to continue further then carefully remove the old seal with the help of a flat screw driver but the tip of the screw driver should be covered with the tape so that it doesn't damage the seal bore and the crankshaft sealing surface. Cover the crankshaft seal journal and the lip of the new seal with multi-purpose grease then gently hammer in the new seal into position with a large socket and hammer making sure the lip of the seal is on the crankshaft seal journal. One of the suggested techniques includes the stripping off of the oil pan, as well as the seal housing. When the oil pan is out of the way disconnect the seal housing as well and scrape off all traces of gasket material. Put the seal and housing assembly on a wooden piece fixed on the workbench, eject the old seal from the back side using punch and hammer. Insert the new seal into the housing by means of driving with a block of wood or a section of pipe that is only a little less in diameter than the outside diameter of the seal, and see that it is not forced in the bore. I applied multi-purpose grease to the crankshaft seal journal and the lip of the new seal; I then fitted a new gasket on the engine block. Very gently seat the seal on the crankshaft by using a smooth rod and then fasten the housing bolts to the correct torque. The remaining steps are just the opposite of the removal steps described above: Lastly, you start the engine and that is the time to check for the oil leaks.
