1991 Pontiac Firebird Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to remove and install an oil pump in V8 engine on 1991 Pontiac Firebird?
A: Remove the oil pan. Remove the pump-to-rear main bearing cap bolt and separate the pump and extension shaft from the engine. If installing a new oil pump, transfer the oil pump driveshaft to the new oil pump, ensuring a new nylon sleeve is in place to retain the driveshaft. To install the pump, move it into position and align the slot on the top end of the extension shaft with the drive tang on the lower end of the distributor driveshaft, as the distributor drives the oil pump, making this alignment essential; if necessary, rotate the oil pump driveshaft. Install the oil pump-to-main bearing cap bolt and tighten it to the specified torque. Reinstall the oil pan.
