1994 Chevrolet Beretta Crankshaft Seal Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace a rear crankshaft seal in 2.3L four cylinder (Quad-4) engine on 1994 Chevrolet Beretta?
A: You can replace the one-piece type of a rear crankshaft seal without removing the engine. However, the transaxle must be removed and the engine supported during this process. First, remove the transaxle. Then, remove the pressure plate and clutch disc. Next, remove the flywheel. After that, remove the oil pan. Once the oil pan is off, there are bolts to be removed and then you can detach the seal housing along with peeling off all old gasket material from it. On a workbench, position the seal housing on top a couple of wooden blocks and drive out the old seal with a punch and hammer from the backside through. Don't cock seat in housing bore; just try to drive new seal into it using a block of wood or section of pipe if you have one large enough. Lubricate with moly-base grease for crankshaft seal journal and lip of new seal. Position new gasket on engine block. Slowly push new seal onto crankshaft. When you push housing against block as you work stiff lip over crankshaft with the end of an extension which is smooth, keep your eye on posture. Note: Slowly refers to pushing new seal on crankshaft. Actually, it should precede "slowly push". By install, tighten housing bolts. Finally, reinstall the transaxle.
