1996 Chevrolet Beretta Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install an axle shaft on 1996 Chevrolet Beretta?
A: To remove the driveaxle, the cable must be disconnected from the negative terminal of the battery and any lockout applied to the models with Delco Loe II audio system. In the case of the front wheel, loosen the front wheel lug nuts, lift the vehicle off the ground with the jack and place it on jack stands then remove the wheel. After that, remove the driveaxle/hub nuts and washer as illustrated while using long punch to avoid turning of the disc/hub. To free the driveaxle from the engaging hub splines, use a gentle force to strike at the narrowed end of the driveaxle with a soft-faced hammer or perhaps a brass punch, however, do so gently in a way that will not force the driveaxle through the hub and subsequently causing some level of damage to it. If this is the case, then several operations can be performed such as if the driveaxle is stuck, then the brake disc has to be dismantled and then a two-jaw puller has to be used. It is therefore recommended that a drain pan be placed below the transaxle in an attempt to capture any drippings of lubricant whenever driveaxles will be off. Disconnect the strut from the steering knuckle and pull out the steering knuckle as a way of disconnecting the drive axlet from the hub but with the outer end supported to avoid straining the innner CV joint. If it proved necessary to remove it from the transaxle then one has to do it very cautiously and the same applies to this joint if it was fitted to the splined end of the intermediate shaft. For removal reverse the installation process; however, make sure that the inner CV joint is located in the differential side gear and retighten the strut-to-knuckle bolts/nuts, fit, a new drive-axle/hub nut and check the transaxle lubricating level and add if required.
