Q: How to remove and install the rear axle shaft on 1995 Chevrolet Beretta?
A: For the removal of the axle assembly, it is necessary to loosen the wheel lug nuts, raise the rear of the car, put on a jack stand and block the front wheels. Next, in case of replacement of the axle assembly, the stabilizer bar and the brake drum needs to be removed from the hubs. Then, it is necessary to take out the coil springs and disconnect parking brake cable at the equalizer. Withdraw the brake hose retaining clips and unscrew the brake line fittings to thereby detach the brake lines from the rear axle assembly. Using a floor jack, lift the axle assembly and remove the bolts which hold this assembly to the vehicle at the pivot points of the underbody side rails and then let the axle assembly roll down to the ground. During installation, if a new axle assembly is to be employed the hub and bearing assemblies, brake assemblies, parking brake cables, hydraulic lines etc should be transferred to the new axle. Lift the new axle into position by putting it on the jack and then fixing only the two pivot bolts loosely. Fit the coil springs and insulators in and then fix the shock absorbers. After the completion of the brake work tighten the brake lines and parking brake cable to the equalizer and place it inside the cable guide. Fit the stabilizer bar, the brake drums and then you bleed the brake system. Last but not least, fit the wheels and then drop the vehicle and finally, turn the lug nuts to the appropriate torque and ensure the vehicle is at production ride height before turning the axle pivot bolts to the corresponding torque.
