  • Q: How to remove and install a manual transmission assembly on 2005 Chevrolet Astro?
    A: To eliminate the transmission, one has to detach the wire from the negative terminal of the battery while turning off the anti-theft option where present in models of the car. Secondly, siphon out the gear oil, disassemble the shifter for 5-speed car, and set the car up on jack stands briskly. Remove the shift linkage rods from the transmission levers and take out the shift control assembly of 4-speed models. Go further to take out the driveshaft, take out the speedometer cable from the transmission, and make way for the removal of exhaust system. Remove the transmission to engine support braces by unscrewing them with a view to noting the location of all the washers and spacers. Jack up the transmission, take off all the bolts that hold the transmission mount and cross member, then, remove the cross member from the car. Gradually lower the jack slowly until contact with the transmission is made; subsequently, remove the necessary bolts fixing the transmission to the bell housing; make sure that the transmission is not left jacking and hanging unsupported lest the input shaft be damaged. Extract the transmission right back out of the clutch hub splines; was it simply lowered down to the ground, For installation, the transmission should be refilled with the recommended grade of lubricating oil and a thin layer of high temperature grease applied to the input shaft splines. Place the transmission on the floor jack, lift it and move it into position insisting that the splined clutch disc hub align with the input shaft, then slide it forward and downwards until firmly resting on the bell housing. In case the unit does not slide in easily, engage the transmission in gear, and turn the output shaft to correct the place of the input shaft splines. Torque the transmission-to-bell housing bolts, raise the jack, and fit the rear mount and crossmember as follows: Subsequent to removal, the remaining of this installation is executed in the reverse order.
