2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the timing chain cover and oil pump assembly in V8 engine on 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer?
A: To deduce the timing chain cover one needs to unscrew the oil pump pick-up tube mounting nuts and bolts, then lower the pick-up tube and screen assembly off the vehicle, be careful to also remove the bolt that secures the oil pick-up tube to the pump. Next turn off the oil pump retaining bolts and then take off the pump from the end of the crankshaft. During disassembly, remove the oil pump cover and then pull out the rotors out of the pump body; clean the parts with solvent then air dry the parts as the time check its condition using signs such as whether the bolt holes have been screwed and the splined area on the crankshaft sprocket. Any of the above mentioned areas if damaged should be replaced with new oil pump complete assembly since no replaceable parts are available. For installation, pour a small quantity of clean motor oil into the pick-up tube hole while rotating the pump with your hand and then place the oil pump over the end of the crankshaft in a manner that the teeth of the crankshaft sprocket will engage those of the oil pump drive gear and finally ensuring that the pump is directly in contact with the block. Screw in the oil pump mounting bolts and tighten up to the recommended torque; on the oil pick up tube, there should be a new O-ring installed and tightened to both the oil pump and the engine block main studs, with considerable tightening on the pick up tube to oil pump bolts to ensure that there is no entrance of air into the oiling system. Last is the timing chain cover fitting and positioning, followed by re-fitting of the oil pan and the rest as a reversal of the process. Check the level of the oil and anti-freeze and fill them up if required, en-gage the engine and check for oil and anti-freeze leaks also, check the oil pressure.
