2006 Saturn Vue Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install an oil pan in 3.0L V6 engine on 2006 Saturn Vue?
A: Before getting at the oil pan, turn off the engine by removing the negative cable from the battery, drain the oil and take out the oil filter. Lift the car and put on jackstands and then unbolt the transaxle bellhousing brace bolts at the oil pan and the mounting bolts of the oil pan. Take extra care to remove the oil pan from the block by prying it away between the oil pan and the engine block surfaces, apart from the pry points to avoid bending or cracking or both, which may or may not lead to an oil leak; if you have to force the removal of the oil pan, then use a large rubber mallet or a block of wood accompanied by a hammer to apply enough force to free the part. For installation, use a gasket scraper or putty knife to remove all old gasket material, seal, from both pan and engine block then, before installing, clean both surfaces together with the mating surface of the engine block with lacquer thinner or acetone; the bolt holes in the engine block should be clean. On the engine block reinforcement, there are specific holes that must be aligned with special alignment dowels before fitting the oil pan. Use a 2 mm bead of RTV sealant to the flange of the oil pan, in a 3 mm bead line around and a little at from front and rear seams where the Oil pump and rear seal retainer meets the engine block. Place the oil pan on the engine block, fit the front bracket assembly and fasten the bolts loosely so that they can only be tightened with fingers, do the same for the bellhousing brace/oil pan bolts. In this step, the oil pan bolts need to be coated with thread locking compound before installing them and then using a deep socket to remove the alignment dowels; then, tighten the bolt to the required torque, in a star form from the center of the oil pan. The following steps include repairing the steps of taking out the oil, the installing of a new oil filler, refilling the crankcase with oil, reconnecting the battery and at last starting the engine, checking for oil leaks at the oil pan, repeating the check after a road test.
