The neutral safety switch prevents the engine from starting in any transmission position except NEUTRAL or PARK, and it is located on the upper side of the steering column under the instrument panel for column shift cars and inside the shift console for floor shift models. For a column-mounted switch, first place the shifter in NEUTRAL, then loosen the screws securing the switch. Fit a 0.090 in. gauge pin into the outer hole on the switch cover and move the switch until the gauge pin drops into the alignment hole on the inner slide, then tighten the securing screws and remove the gauge pin. For a console-mounted switch, place the shifter in PARK, remove the center console, and loosen the switch securing screws. Fit a 0.090 in. gauge pin into the outer hole on the switch cover, move the switch until the gauge pin drops into the alignment hole on the inner slide, tighten the securing screws, and remove the gauge pin. Finally, check to ensure the car will only start in NEUTRAL or PARK.
