Buick Skylark Variable Timing Sprocket

The Buick Skylark Variable Timing Sprocket lets the engine tailor camshaft timing for stronger torque or higher rpm power, giving drivers flexible performance. This Variable Timing Sprocket features multiple keyways in the crank gear plus precisely machined slots or offset bushings on the cam gear, so builders can advance or retard valve events by a few degrees instead of being stuck with factory marks that may drift two or three degrees. By advancing the cam, the Variable Timing Sprocket opens intake valves earlier and boosts low-end pull, while a slight retard keeps them open longer for top end horsepower, allowing up to fifty horsepower to be recovered on tuned motors. Because accurate alignment is vital, the system is always installed as a complete set with fresh chain, guides, and tensioners on overhead cam versions to maintain proper mesh and silence in modern Buick powerplants. Earlier Skylark editions relied on basic single-key sprockets, but later ones adopted the adjustable Variable Timing Sprocket, the chief difference being the built-in adjustment hardware that removes the need for external degree wheels once set. Thanks to this upgrade, Buick loyalists enjoy stock reliability with performance cam precision in their beloved Skylark models, and every Variable Timing Sprocket continues to safeguard smooth timing while inviting future tuning freedom.

Each OEM Buick Skylark Variable Timing Sprocket we offer is competitively priced and comes with the assurance of the manufacturer's warranty for the part. Furthermore, we guarantee the speedy delivery of your orders right to your doorstep. Our hassle-free return policy is also in place for your peace of mind.

Buick Skylark Variable Timing Sprocket Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the Timing Chain and Variable Timing Sprocket on Buick Skylark?
    A:
If an engine has been removed from the car, some of the procedures described below should be ignored as well. First of all, you should degrade the torsional damper and the crankcase cover. Next, rotate the engine until that mark on the sprockets matches the other so that both sprockets and the chain cannot be removed from the engine in the wrong position. Then, take out the three camshaft sprocket retaining bolts and raise the camshaft sprocket and the timing chain up from the front of the engine with a tap of a soft-faced mallet if require. In the case when the crankcase sprocket has to be removed, use a puller which is designated for such operations. Fit the crankshaft sprocket to the crankshaft with a bolt and washer of the puller set. Next drop in the timing chain onto the camshaft sprocket with the slack downwards over the crankshaft sprocket. Slide the chain over the crankshaft sprocket, then bring the camshaft sprocket home with the three screws on the front, using a lot of care that you do not hammer since you can knock the freeze plug at the back of the engine. After the chain and both the sprockets have been fitted, ensure that the marks on the two sprockets coincide but if they do not, then the camshaft sprocket should be removed again to facilitate the alignment of marks. Last but not the least, apply the engine oil on the chain and put back all the parts in reverse manner that they were dismantled.
