  Q: How to separate and reassemble the fuel pump and fuel level sending unit components?

  A: You can purchase the complete Fuel Pump/fuel level sensor module, or you can purchase either the fuel pump or the fuel level sensor separately. If only one component fails, use this procedure to separate the two components, then reassemble the good component and the new replacement component. Remove the fuel pump/fuel level sensor. Place the fuel pump/fuel level sensor on a clean workbench surface. Disconnect the fuel level sensor electrical connector from the fuel pump mounting flange. Disengage the fuel level sensor wiring harness from the top of the fuel pump module. Remove the fuel level sensor unit from the fuel pump module. Pry these two retaining tangs on the locking lugs of the sensor, then slide the sensor up and remove it from the pump module. No further disassembly of the fuel pump module is possible. If any component of the fuel pump module is defective, replace the fuel pump module. To install the fuel level sensor on the fuel pump module, slide the sensor unit into place until you hear a click, then pull on the sensor unit to verify that it's locked into place. The float arm snaps into the fuel level sensor. The remaining installation is the reverse of removal.
