When disconnecting the cables, one should first take off the cable connected to the negative terminal and connect it last; if only replacing the cable of the positive terminal, the negative cable should be disconnected first; this way, one will prevent short-circuiting of the battery with the tool used to remove the cables clamps. When both cables are detached from the battery, follow each back to its other end and remove it; this should enable a proper tracking of the location of each wire in a vehicle to facilitate proper installation. The positive battery cable route is also under the carpet from the engine compartment to the trunk area and to access it one has to remove carpeting, front and rear seats as well as the quarter trim panels. If removing any of the old cables, bring them with to the store because it is important to use the same kind of cables. To gain access to the threads of the solenoid or ground connection that are rusty and corroded, use a wire brush to clean them and again apply some coating of battery terminal corrosion inhibitor or petroleum jelly to avoid experiences in rusting. If the cable is connected to the solenoid then tighten the mounting nut/bolt on it and if it is connected to the ground then tighten the nut/bolt on the ground. It prevents one from stretching the cable before you connect it to the battery; it is to connect the positive cable to the positive terminal of the battery first then the ground cable to the negative terminal of the battery.
