How to remove and install a crankshaft on Chevrolet Cobalt?

To remove the crankshaft, you must first take the engine out of the car. A dial indicator or feeler gauges are used to check the endplay before the crankshaft comes off. After this has been done, you remove and loosen the lower crankcase bolts. Then, take out the lower crankcase. At last, using an assistant's help, you can pull the crankshaft from inside the engine very carefully. The engine block and crankshaft should be cleaned and inspected for installation purposes. The bearing surfaces are cleaned and original bearing inserts removed. The new upper and lower main bearing inserts are put in their proper places while ensuring correct alignment is maintained. The main bearing oil clearance is checked with Plastigage, and at times different bearing inserts may be necessary. All Plastigage material is scraped off and then lift away from cylinder block. Afterwards, lubricate and clean faces of bearing insert in cylinder block before placing back of the crankshaft into position again. Install lower crankcase tightening all bolts to proper torque levels. Recheck crankshaft endplay by rotating it manually to guarantee smooth motion without binding or tightness anywhere on its surface of contact areas during rotation in its best case scenario . Eventually put in place rear main oil seal.
