  Q: How to replace CV joint boots?

  A: Before starting the job of replacing CV boots, it is important to explore all options. A complete rebuilt driveaxles can be obtained on an exchange basis which is less time consuming. Check the cost and availability of parts before disassembling the vehicle. The driveaxle should be placed in a vise lined with rags to protect the axleshaft when replacing the inner boot. Check for excessive play and smooth operation of the CV joint. Where a boot is torn, a joint must be removed, cleaned, and inspected for damage. Some models may have a protective cover which has to be removed in order to get at the boots. The old boot clamps must be cut off and the wire retainer ring pried off to replace the inner boot. Then, the outer race may come out by pulling it off while the snap-ring should be removed from the axleshaft. Prying apart the inner race and cage helps in removing balls inside it. Lastly, inspect for damage of inner race, cage, and balls that are present in any model. Wrap Axle Shaft splines with tape so as not to damage the boot, slide small clamp and then boot onto the axleshaft. Put inner race and cage assembly in place then pack CV joint grease into the bearing. Insert outer race over inner race then install retaining ring. To seat this boot properly into its housing or seal grooves on axle, secure these two boot clamps accordingly. Do not remove this outer CV joint from axle shaft. In order to replace the outer boot from here, remove the inner CV joint and boot. Cut off clamps then remove the outer boot from the axle shaft. Clean the outer CV joint assembly using solvent then check for wear and damage. If any components of a CV joint are excessively worn, replace the entire axle assembly. Use tape wrap around splines on shafts, insert new boots & clamps onto shafts. The outer CV joint needs to be repacked with new CV grease as well as spreading some grease inside the new boot. Place the outer boot on this CV joint then install new boot clamps. Reassemble the inner CV joint and boot as well as installing the driveaxle.
