Chevrolet El Camino Steering Knuckle

The Steering Knuckle of the Chevrolet El Camino holds the front wheels in place, permits their rotation for steering, and makes sure you have a smooth suspension travel. The Steering Knuckle serves as the suspension center point, linking the upper and lower control arms or strut and lower arm, receiving the tie-rod end, and carrying the spindle or hub which holds the wheel. Thus, every bump or turn is handled in a stable manner. In the early generations of the El Camino, the Steering Knuckle was a kingpin style where the spindle rotated on fixed bushings. But as independent front suspension became widespread, Chevrolet substituted the kingpin for ball joints. Chevrolet also added two different rear-wheel-drive versions; one was forged with an integral spindle for tapered roller bearings. The other was drilled to accept a bolt-on hub with sealed bearings. The two layouts allow upward mobility of the wheels on uneven road surfaces and a lateral swing when steering inputs are made. The El Camino platform's basic Steering Knuckle mission was kept the same through every body style change, and it has produced a Steering Knuckle that conforms to Chevrolet durability standards but is rarely replaced unless there is crash damage or distorted ball-joint tapers.

Chevrolet El Camino Steering Knuckle Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and reinstall the steering knuckle on Chevrolet El Camino?
    A:
Cover the body of the car as far as possible with clay and then lift the front part of the car up so that only its springs support its weight, and then put the wheels off. Fourth, subsequently remove the disc brake caliper and the rotor, using a block of wood to ensure that the disc pads are not engaged whilst removing a caliper. Loosen the screws that hold splash shield and take it off freeing the caliper assembly, and suspend it from some convenient part of the suspension with care to let the hydraulic line take no load. Remove the upper and lower ball joint stud cotter pins and pull out the ball studs and withdraw the tie-rod end from the steering knuckle. After taking off the steering knuckle, it should be positioned back when replacing and the upper and lower ball stud then fitted. Place the ball stud nuts and torque tighten the same to the recommended value, ensure that the cotter pin hole is aligned and fit a new cotter pin. Torque the tie-rod to the recommended value, fit the splash shield, hub and rotor in the place. Latter protect the outer bearing and place the spindle washer and nut on and also place the caliper and wheels ; Lower the car to the ground.
