Chevrolet Equinox Drive Belt Parts Questions & Answers

  • Q: What is the purpose of a serpentine drivebelt and how should it be inspected and replaced?
A: The front of the engine houses a winding serpentine drive belt which operates the power steering pump, alternator, air conditioning compressor and the water pump. The belt has to be checked for wear periodically because it is prone to cracking, separating, fraying or glazing. Examine both sides of the belt including under-ribs that should be even in depth. A spring-loaded tensioner assembly, which cannot be adjusted maintains tension on the drive belt. The belt can then be changed when the indexing arrow is aligned with an indexing mark on the tensioner assembly. To replace this belt, remove air filter housing and support engine on V6 models before removing right-side engine mount and bracket. Release its pressure by fitting 3/8-inch drive ratchet or breaker bar into square hole in tensioner so as to have it removed first; thereafter put into place a new one via guiding it through pulleys and finally use tensioner so as to enable installation take place. For replacing the tensioner, the drivebelt must come off while some models may need removal of either a tensioner mounting bolt or bracket bolts. Reverse of removal procedure is applied during installation process with tightening of mounting bolt(s).
