The Chevrolet Equinox Flywheel creates a smoothed engine power flow by storing rotational energy and creating stable acceleration. The crankshaft is bolted to a heavy steel Flywheel whose mass spreads the spike from each combustion. The Flywheel has a toothed ring that engages the starter motor, so turning the key spins the crankshaft until the engine fires. The Flywheel face serves as the friction surface for the clutch disc and is where the pressure plate is anchored. This allows the Equinox to swap gears without jerkiness. Grinding noises may come from the starter at startup in the case of broken ring-gear teeth over time. The surface can be scored and warped by heat and wear. Chevrolet offered two designs in various model years, a conventional solid Flywheel and a dual-mass version. The dual-mass Flywheel design features springs trapped between its two sections, preventing a vibration that is present on solid designs from reaching the driveline; this produces an improvement to shift feel. They are, however, non-resurfacing and can fail internally. The solid can, in some cases, be machined within strict limits. When damage exceeds specifications, most Chevrolet owners prefer a total replacement to have the Equinox functioning properly.
