The Chevrolet Express Distributor takes high voltage from one ignition coil and directs it to the spark plugs in the correct sequence at the right time, making it easy for a V8 or V6 engine to start and run smoothly. Within a cast, a rotor which drives a camshaft spins below a plastic cap, and as it sweeps past each tower, it hands off 15,000 to 40,000 volts which whizz down wires to the plugs. The initial models were dependent on breaker points, a condenser, and centrifugal and vacuum advance weights that interrupted the coil current and shifted the timing when the engine speed or load changed. A constant service requirement is imposed by points wear, arcing, and spring fatigue. Thus, in the 1970s drivers saw the appearance of the electronic Distributor using a toothed reluctor and a magnetic pickup. This device signaled a module to switch current. This eliminated most moving contacts and with it much unreliability. This unit also rotates the oil pump by the same shaft, but the electronic type gave a hotter spark, steadier advance, and far less maintenance. The Distributor cap protects the internal components inside the cap from moisture and carbon tracking. It is important to check the Distributor cap and rotor to avoid misfiring. When Chevrolet revamped the Express, later engines followed the lead of coil packs in removing the need for the traditional Distributor, although it doesn't hurt to know how it works on earlier Chevrolet Express models.
