All cars built from 1973 on include impact-resistant device connections between bumpers and car frames so they meet safety rules. The energy absorbing devices in these vehicles contain pressurized gas and hydraulic fluid and need to stay that way-they shouldn't be tampered with or heated. When needed during an accident or when disposing the vehicle, relieving gas pressure starts by drilling a hole through the caution tag on the body of the energy absorber with eye protection while doing so. To take the front bumper off, remove 8 nuts (4 on each side) holding it to the energy-absorber, then unhook the nuts and bolts securing the bumper reinforcement to the bumper face bar. Also undo any bolts and nuts holding protective strips and bumper guards, if they are present. Unscrew 5 bolts to separate the energy absorber from its frame holder at the front and back. Remove all 4 bolts from the front side and one nut from the back. Then carefully slide the energy absorber off the frame. Putting back the bumper uses the same steps that took it apart. The way to take off and put back the rear bumper works just like it does for the front bumper.
