When the switch is functioning correctly, the engine should crank with the selector lever in Park or Neutral, and the backup lights should activate in Reverse. For a new switch installation, position the shift lever against the Neutral gate by rotating the lower lever on the shift tube counterclockwise from the driver's seat. Find the switch actuating tang in the shifter tube slot and tighten the securing screws. After connecting the wiring harness, turn on the ignition to verify that the starter motor engages. If the switch is operating properly, moving the shift lever out of Neutral will shear the alignment pin installed during production. For an old switch installation or adjustment, use a pin or drill bit approximately 3/32-inch in diameter to align the switch hole with the actuating tang, inserting the pin to a depth of 1/4-inch, and remove it before shifting out of Neutral. Earlier models require inserting a pin into the gauge hole for adjustment, while later models automatically adjust when the shift lever is moved to Park. To readjust a later model switch, shift the assembly housing to Low gear and then to Park.
