The Park/Lock system makes it impossible to change the position of the shift lever out of Park unless the brake pedal is pressed and it does not allow the owner to turn the ignition key in the switch to the 'off' position unless the shift lever is fully in Park. When the car is turned on, a solenoid is engaged and fixed the shift lever into the park position; when the brake pedal is pressed, the solenoid is disengaged and the shift lever is free to cover the other positions on the gear. In systems there is usually a provision to manoeuvre the car out of 'Park' if the electrical system fails in one way or the other. To engage override, require the removal of shift lever trim boot and pull the override lever found at the upper right corner of the shift lever bracket forward to Facing the front end of the car. In order to replace a solenoid, the floor console must be removed, the electrical connector must be disconnected from the solenoid, the manual release lever has to be freed from its pivot bore and the solenoid must be taken off after removing its mounting screws. Removal and installation processes are analogous to each other; the difference is that installation is done in the opposite order.
