  Q: What is the purpose of the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor?

  A: The Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor supplies the PCM with a signal on the position of the crankshaft. The PCM uses this information to order ignition for every cylinder, manipulate ignition timing, calculate engine speed, and detect misfires through the Onboard Diagnostic system. A reluctor ring cut into slots triggers the sensor on the crankshaft and is positioned about 0.050 inch from it. The PCM's operation of an ignition system is nonexistent without a crankshaft position sensor input. However, there is a Crankshaft Position Sensor variation learning procedure that must be conducted when changing the sensor so as not to cause a false misfire diagnostic trouble code. Go to a dealership service department or another well-equipped repair shop if you have installed a new component but still keep receiving error signals. In order to replace the sensor, disconnecting the cable from negative battery terminal, raise the vehicle and securely support it using jack stands are necessary procedures. The left rear of the engine block on inline engines and behind starter on 5.3L engines are locations for this sensor .On V8 engines, remove the starter and disconnect wiring from the sensor. Unbolt and remove both components .To install them again, use other parts in reverse order while ensuring new O-rings have been installed on the sensors and O-rings were lubricated with engine oil.
