The GMC Terrain Flywheel helps to smooth out engine power by storing rotational energy. It engages the starter during engine ignition and provides the clutch with its surface for friction. Bolted to the crankshaft, this Flywheel revolves whenever the motor is running, with its mass converting the pulsing explosions in the cylinders to constant motion that the driver feels through the pedals. In the Terrain range, two primary Flywheel styles have been applied: the traditional solid disc and the dual mass Flywheel that has a spring damped section between the primary and secondary masses to absorb excess vibration. While the solid may be resurfaced if clutch heat leaves grooves or warpage, the dual mass type usually has to be replaced if the springs are loose or if its face is worn because machining could disrupt the sensitive damper gap. Ring gear teeth pressed around the Flywheel rim can also wear, resulting in grinding starts, and severe damage may require a complete unit swap, although on many models the gear alone can be heated off and renewed. Later GMC revisions maintained clutch dimensions to ensure that a new unit would mate seamlessly with existing pressure plates so that every Terrain driver enjoys smooth launches. Overall, when selecting a new GMC component when the wear becomes excessive, it maintains quiet starts and stable power delivery.
