Q: How to remove and reinstall Alternator Brush from a Pontiac Fiero?
A: Get the Alternator out of the vehicle. Put marks on both front and rear end frame housings by scribing them or using paint to facilitate reassembly. Before taking apart two halves, scribe or paint the drive end frame assembly and rectifier end frame assembly. Place a paper clip from the back of the rear end frame through it to hold the brushes in place. When you are disassembling or reassembling, insert a paper clip into the back of the alternator so as to hold brushes steady while doing so. The one shown here may not necessarily resemble your own alternator. While still holding with one hand, separate the drive end frame from the rectifier end frame using four through-bolts with a paper clip intact between them. To remove stator turn on its bolts, this will be followed by separation of stator from the end frame. Remove nuts attaching rectifier bridge to diode trio then take out diode trio. Take off paper clip while holding brush holder closed so that brushes fall slowly into catcher at back of brush holder; at same time withdraw bolts that connect regulator and resistor to this part of machine if necessary. Use your hands to unfasten regulator from resistor by sliding retainers downward past little holes which keep these parts together; caution: do not damage any other part such as spring retainer during this operation! Pull springs out of brush holder(s). Installation procedure is exactly as stated for removal procedure but reversed in orientation like putting brush closest to left side first because this way it will fit better and be easier later on when completing assembly just slip paperclip through rear-parted-stop-hold-just-wait-there-stay-brushes-till-you-finish-the-whole-assemblage never take it out until front-rear frames are bolted together.
