- Q: What precautions should be taken when removing and installing the inertia weight section of the harmonic balancer in V6 engine on Pontiac Fiero?A:The inertia weight section of the harmonic balancer is assembled to the hub with a rubber sleeve, the removal and installation procedures must be taken otherwise the tuning of the balancer and the engine timing reference will be faulty. Start with the removal of the negative cable from the battery, then, if needed, free the bolts that regulate the position of the accessory drivebelts and detach all the belts, putting tags to facilitate their reconnection. Tighten the starter ring gear with a large screwdriver and undo the bolts on the accessory drivebelt pulley and upon one removing the pulley. Even when the ring gear is locked in position remove the sinc balancer retaining bolt and place a puller on the sinc balancer and slowly pull it off the crank-shaft without dropping it. The use of a puller that bolts to the hub should be used because a claw-type gear puller will only pull the outer part of the balancer from the hub.
