  Q: How to inspect and replace battery cables?

  A: At regular intervals check the whole length of each battery cable for damage, or insulation that is cracked or burned and corrosion. Inspect the cable-to-terminal connections at the ends of the cables for cracks, loose strands of wire and corrosion. White fluffy deposits under insulation at the cable terminal connection show corrosion and require new cable. Start with negative battery post when disconnecting cables to avoid shorting battery. Note how cables are routed; trace old wires from terminals on battery, then remove them from lower connections. The smaller ground cables go to the top of the radiator cross-member while the bigger one goes to transaxle. The starter motor solenoid is connected to positive cable. Some cables are bundled with tape or cable ties, which must be cut to separate them. When cutting electrical tape be careful not to cut into wires. Ground cables are typically black and smaller while positive cables are red in color and larger in diameter. Take old ones when buying replacements to ensure compatibility. Clean threads on lower cable ends before connecting it back to starter solenoid or ground connection using wire brush, apply corrosion inhibitor or petroleum jelly and attach positive cable lastly on battery post again. Reattach cables onto harnesses, brackets or clips; subsequently reconnect ground cable onto negative battery post.
