Saturn LS1 Transmission Assembly

The Saturn LS1 sedan uses a Transmission Assembly that transmits engine torque into controllable power so the car can accelerate at any speed. The Transmission Assembly permits the engine to spin faster up hills while cruising at relaxed speeds to save fuel, all the while ensuring drivability by directing thrust via carefully selected gear ratios. The first driving required the use of leg-wrenching clutches and tricky double-clutch shifts. Later on, the advent of hydraulic clutches paved the way for the creation of a fully automatic version of the Hydra-Matic style Transmission Assembly. Further, the Transmission Assembly still inspires contemporary models. The Saturn LS1 came with several Transmission Assembly styles, each designed to achieve the same result in a different way. A manual gearbox that works with two parallel shafts and a driver-selected gear gives a direct feel. Then there is the automatic that works with planetary gearsets and fluid pressure so that a computer handles each upshift. There are also the belt-and-pulley CVT that replaces fixed gears with one that changes ratios seamlessly, as well as the DCT that hides two manual gearsets behind dual clutches so shifts happen at computer-controlled lightning speed. Manuals are preferred for their simplicity and low weight, automatics are chosen for convenience, CVTs provide steady acceleration, and DCTs fuse fast shifting and efficiency. These are tunes that fans can select based on their driving taste while protecting the Transmission Assembly over time and preserving Saturn LS1 durability value.

Each OEM Saturn LS1 Transmission Assembly we offer is competitively priced and comes with the assurance of the manufacturer's warranty for the part. Furthermore, we guarantee the speedy delivery of your orders right to your doorstep. Our hassle-free return policy is also in place for your peace of mind.

Saturn LS1 Transmission Assembly Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How should be prepared and the transmission assembly removed from the engine compartment on Saturn LS1?
    A:
The vehicle must be raised and supported high enough to allow the transaxle to come out from the engine compartment, ensuring it is supported by the uni-body and not the subframe, as the subframe needs to be removed for transaxle removal. Begin by placing the vehicle in PARK with the parking brake engaged, then remove the battery and battery tray, ensuring to disconnect the negative cable first. Clearly label and unplug all transaxle electrical connectors, removing any related brackets as necessary. Disconnect the Shift Cable from the shift lever at the transaxle, remove the shift cable bracket from the rear powertrain mount, and tie it to the firewall. Remove the Output Shaft Speed sensor, and for V6 models, remove the drivebelt, drivebelt tensioner, and alternator. Loosen the front wheel lug nuts and driveaxle/hub nuts, then securely place the vehicle on jackstands. Drain the transaxle fluid and remove both driveaxles. Remove the transaxle oil cooler line assembly by first removing the retaining nut and then pulling the assembly straight out. For 2001 through 2003 four-cylinder models, remove the A.I.R. pump electrical connectors, related hoses, and the air pump and bracket. Support the engine from above using an engine hoist or support tool, then remove the subframe. Support the transaxle with a transmission jack, securing it with straps or chains. Remove the brace connecting the engine to the transaxle, then remove the starter and the torque converter-to-driveplate bolts, turning the crankshaft for access. Mark the relationship of the torque converter to the driveplate, remove the two lower transaxle-to-engine bolts, and mark the position of the driver's side powertrain mount bolts before removing them. Remove the remaining bolts attaching the transaxle to the engine, ensuring all wires, hoses, brackets, and mounts are disconnected before sliding the transaxle jack toward the side of the vehicle until the transaxle is clear of the engine locating dowels, keeping it level. For installation, reverse the removal procedure, ensuring the torque converter's drive tangs engage with the recesses in the automatic transaxle fluid pump inner gear, aligning the match marks made on the torque converter and driveplate. Install all driveplate-to-torque converter bolts before tightening, then tighten the driveplate-to-torque converter bolts, transaxle mounting bolts, driveaxle/hub nuts, and wheel lug nuts. Finally, fill the transaxle with the correct type and amount of automatic transmission fluid and shift the transaxle into all gear positions to confirm shift cable adjustment, readjusting if necessary.
