Q: What precautions should be taken when cleaning and removing fuel tanks in Saturn Vue?
A: These vehicles have plastic fuel tanks installed in them which are not fixable. This is a task that should be handled by somebody with experience on it and is highly risky and critical when it comes to professional cleaning of the tank after it has been removed from the vehicle. Sometimes, even after washing and rinsing the fuel tank, there may still be explosive vapors. If you take off the fuel tank from your car, don't put it near any place where fumes may escape through spark or an open flame can ignite them. There is also need to exercise extra caution within garages containing gas appliances since explosions could occur as a result of such appliances.
A: Remove the fuel tank filler cap to relieve fuel tank pressure. Relieve the fuel system pressure. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. If the fuel tank is empty or nearly empty, it's not necessary to siphon the remaining fuel from the tank. But if there is a lot of fuel in the tank, obtain a siphon kit at an auto parts store and siphon out the remaining fuel. Raise the rear of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the rear section of the exhaust system. On AWD models, remove the driveshaft. Carefully clean around all of the vent hoses, squeeze the tabs and pull the connections apart. Disconnect the filler hose from the tank. The fuel tank fill hose uses a hose clamp-all other fittings are the quick-connect type. Also detach the fuel hose(s) at the fitting(s) near the tank, and the8/AP hoses from the canister. Disconnect the wiring harnesses from the fuel tank. Support the fuel tank securely. Remove the fuel tank retaining strap bolts and remove the straps. Carefully lower the fuel tank. If you're going to clean the fuel tank, do so. Installation is the reverse of removal. Be sure to tighten the fuel tank strap bolts securely. Reconnect the cable to the negative battery terminal, then start the engine and check for fuel leaks.
