Q:
How to remove and install the Throttle Cable? Posted by Customer
A:
The throttle control system is the cable type with no linkage adjustments, meaning only the specific replacement part will work. After performing work on the throttle controls, it's crucial to ensure all components are installed as they were removed and that all linkage and cables are not rubbing or binding. When servicing the throttle cable, the retainer must be installed with the tangs secured over the head of the stud, the conduit fitting at both ends of the cable must have its locking tangs expanded and locked in the attaching holes, the braided portion of the throttle cable must not come in contact with the front of the dash sealer during assembly, repair or replacement, and flexible components must not be routed within two inches of the moving parts of the throttle linkage outboard of the support bracket unless the routing is positively controlled. When servicing the accelerator pedal, the mounting surface between the support and the dash panel must be free of insulation, the carpet and padding in the pedal and tunnel area must be positioned to lay flat and be free of wrinkles and bunches, the throttle control cable must be slipped through the slot in the rod and then install the retainer in the rod, ensuring it is seated and the cable is not kinked or damaged, and after all components of the throttle linkage are secured, the linkage must operate freely without binding between closed throttle and wide open throttle. To replace the throttle, detach the cable from the negative terminal of the battery, remove the air filter housing and adapter, locate the forward end of the throttle cable at the engine, pop the retaining clip on the end of the throttle linkage stud loose with a small screwdriver, disconnect the retainer from the throttle lever stud, then disconnect the throttle cable from the notch on the throttle valve, pinch the two locking tabs of the ferrule together and pull the cable through the hole in the bracket, locate the upper end of the accelerator pedal lever, pull the small plastic brush out of the top of the lever, push the lever forward and lift the cable free of the slot in the top of the lever, locate the spot immediately above and forward of the upper end of the accelerator pedal level where the cable comes through the firewall, pull the large rubber washer loose, pinch the locking tabs together and pull the cable through the firewall, and finally, installation is the reverse of removal.
