Q:
How to inspect and replace radiator hoses and heater hoses? Posted by Customer
A:
During an inspection, it is important to check the upper and lower radiator hoses, as well as the heater hoses, for any signs of deterioration, leaks, or loose hose clamps. This should be done every 15,000 miles (24,000 km) and also periodically in early spring and at the beginning of fall or winter. A visual inspection can help identify weakened hoses that may need to be replaced to avoid potential breakdowns. When checking the hoses, ensure that the engine and cooling system are cold. Look for any cracking, rotting, or collapsed hoses and replace them as necessary. Run your hand along the length of the hose and if you notice a weak or swollen spot, it is a sign that the hose should be replaced. When removing and installing hoses, start by removing the radiator pressure cap, making sure the engine is not running and has cooled down. Position a clean container under the radiator or engine draincock/plug and open the drain to allow the cooling system to drain to an appropriate level. Be cautious when draining coolant as it is toxic to animals. Loosen the hose clamps at each end of the hose and pull them back. Twist, pull, and slide the hose off the fitting, being careful not to damage the neck of the component. If the hose is stuck, do not use sharp tools to free it as it may cause damage. Instead, make a slice along the portion of the hose that is stuck and peel it off. Clean both hose mounting connections and inspect the condition of the hose clamps, replacing them if necessary. To install the new hose, dip the ends into clean engine coolant to ease installation. Slide the clamps over the replacement hose and slide the hose ends over the connections into position. Secure the clamps at least 1/4 in (6.35mm) from the ends of the hose, making sure they are located beyond the raised bead of the connector. Close the radiator or engine drains and refill the cooling system with clean drained engine coolant or a suitable mixture of ethylene glycol coolant and water. If available, use a pressure tester to check for leaks. If not, run the engine until it reaches normal operating temperature and check for leaks. Be cautious not to touch any moving or hot engine parts when checking for leaks.
