Q:
How to remove and install the cooling fan on a Cadillac Fleetwood? Posted by Customer
A:
Before performing any work, it is essential to ensure the safety and proper functioning of the vehicle's radiator fan(s). For 4.5L and 4.9L engines on DeVille and Fleetwood models, disconnect the negative battery cable, raise and support the vehicle, and detach the electrical connectors from the rear of the fan assemblies. Remove the fan-to-lower radiator cradle bolts, lower the vehicle, and for the right fan removal, remove the air conditioning accumulator for clearance. Remove the air cleaner intake duct and upper fan-to-radiator panel bolts along with the upper radiator panel to access and remove the radiator fan assemblies. To install, replace the radiator fan(s) and its mounting bolts, reconnect the air cleaner intake duct and air conditioning accumulator if removed, raise and support the vehicle again, attach the fan-to-lower radiator cradle mounting bolts, connect the electrical connectors, and finally, reconnect the negative battery cable. For the front fan on Eldorado and Seville models, disconnect the negative battery cable, remove the radiator cover panel, detach the electrical connector, remove the right headlight bracket, and remove the fan-retaining bolts to take out the radiator fan from the vehicle. To install, place the radiator fan back into the vehicle, tighten the fan-retaining bolts, reconnect the electrical connector, install the right headlight bracket, and put back the radiator cover panel. Finally, connect the negative battery cable. For the rear fan on Eldorado and Seville models, disconnect the negative battery cable, detach the fan electrical connector, remove the upper engine-to-radiator support torque strut and oil cooler line bracket from the fan, and remove the fan-retaining bolts to take out the radiator fan. To install, place the radiator fan back into the vehicle, tighten the fan-retaining bolts, reconnect the electrical connector, reattach the upper engine-to-radiator support torque strut and oil cooler line bracket to the fan, and tighten the torque strut-to-radiator mounting bolts. Finally, connect the negative battery cable. For 4.6L engines, disconnect the negative battery cable, remove the beauty panel assembly, remove the left side engine torque support strut, and position the upper radiator hose out of the way. Detach the fan electrical connector and remove the retaining bolts to remove the radiator fan(s). To install, place the radiator fan(s) back into the vehicle and tighten the retaining bolts, reconnect the fan electrical connector, reposition the upper radiator hose, and install the left side engine torque strut. Finally, install the beauty panel assembly and connect the negative battery cable. To test the cooling fan motor, first, check the fuse or circuit breaker for power to the cooling fan motor. Remove the connector(s) at the cooling fan motor(s), connect a jumper wire, and apply battery voltage to the positive terminal of the cooling fan motor. Using an ohmmeter, check for continuity in the cooling fan motor. Make sure to remove the cooling fan connector at the fan motor before performing continuity checks. Ensure proper continuity of the cooling fan motor ground circuit at the chassis ground connector. Perform continuity checks of the motor windings only, as applying ohmmeter battery voltage to the PCM can cause damage.
