Q:
How to begin the installation of the piston/connecting rod assemblies? Posted by Customer
A:
To begin the installation of the piston/connecting rod assemblies, ensure the cylinder walls are meticulously clean, the top edges of each cylinder are chamfered, and the crankshaft is in place. Remove the cap from the end of the number one connecting rod, keeping track of any marks made during removal, and remove the original bearing inserts, wiping the connecting rod and cap bearing surfaces meticulously with a clean, lint-free cloth to maintain impeccable cleanliness. For the connecting rod bearing oil clearance check, clean the backside of the new upper bearing insert and lay it in place in the connecting rod, ensuring the tab on the bearing fits into the rod's recess. Similarly, clean the backside of the other bearing insert and install it in the rod cap, making sure the tab aligns with the cap's recess. Position the piston ring gaps at 120-degree intervals around the piston, lubricate the piston and rings with clean engine oil, and use a piston ring compressor to compress the rings flush with the piston while gently inserting the piston/connecting rod assembly into the number one cylinder bore, ensuring correct orientation. Tap the piston gently while guiding the connecting rod into place on the crankshaft journal, taking care not to force it. After installation, check the connecting rod bearing oil clearance using Plastigage and compare the results to specifications. Remove the cap without disturbing the Plastigage and clean any traces of Plastigage material. Apply a uniform layer of clean moly-base grease or engine assembly lube to both bearing faces before reinstalling the cap and nuts in three steps. Repeat this process for the remaining pistons/connecting rods, ensuring cleanliness, correct piston/rod assemblies, piston orientation, and lubrication. After installation, rotate the crankshaft manually to check for binding, and verify connecting rod endplay as needed.

Q:
How should the connecting rod/piston assemblies be removed from the engine, and what should be used to prevent damage during removal for the 1990 Chevrolet Beretta? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove the connecting rod/piston assemblies from the engine, push them out through the top of the engine using a wooden or plastic hammer handle to push on the upper bearing surface in the connecting rod. If resistance is felt, double-check to make sure all of the ridge was removed from the cylinder.
