Q:
How to remove and install a water pump in Pontiac Fiero? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove a four-cylinder engine, start by disconnecting the cable from the negative battery terminal and draining the cooling system. Then, remove the water pump drivebelt and the lower radiator hose at the pump support housing. Next, remove the water pump attaching bolts and lift the water pump out of the engine compartment. To install a new water pump, clean the gasket surface on the pump support housing and apply RTV sealant around the mounting flange of the new water pump. Install the water pump on the housing and tighten the bolts to the specified torque. Reattach the lower radiator hose, install the water pump drivebelt, and adjust it to the proper tension. Finally, fill the cooling system with fresh coolant, attach the negative battery cable, start the engine, and check for coolant leaks. To remove a V6 engine, start by removing the right side louvered cover over the engine compartment and disconnecting the negative cable from the battery. Remove the plastic battery shield and drain the cooling system. Then, remove the nut securing the wiring harness to the junction block behind the battery and remove the EGR vacuum solenoid and bracket. Loosen the right rear wheel lug nuts, raise the rear of the vehicle, and remove the right rear wheel. Loosen the alternator adjusting bolts and remove the drivebelt. Next, remove the water pump bolts and nut. Lower the vehicle and lift out the water pump from the top. To install a new water pump, clean the mating surface on the block and apply RTV sealant to the new water pump mating surface. Put the water pump in position, raise the vehicle, and install the water pump bolts and nut. Tighten them to the specified torque. The remainder of the installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Finally, fill the cooling system with fresh antifreeze mixture, start the engine, bring it to normal operating temperature, and check for coolant leaks.
