The oil pump and screen can be accessed by removing the oil pan. For Buick engines, the driveshaft extension should be inserted through the main bearing cap until it mates with the distributor drive gear. In the case of 231, 252, and 350 Buick engines, the oil pump is located in the timing chain cover and connected to the oil screen housing and pipe assembly in the oil pan. To remove the oil pump cover and gears, the oil filter must first be removed. The cover assembly can then be detached, allowing for the removal of the oil pump gears. It is important to clean and inspect the gears for any defects. For 1981-87 engines, wear specifications are provided for the oil pump gears. Gear tip wear can be measured by passing a narrow feeler gauge between the oil pump housing wall and the tips of the gear teeth. The oil pressure relief valve should also be checked for wear or scoring. Lubricating the relief valve and spring with clean engine oil, they can be placed back in the cover. The oil pump gear cavity should be packed with petroleum jelly before reinstalling the gears. The cover assembly can then be installed using a new gasket and sealer.
