Q:
How to remove and install the Axle Shaft for Buick Skylark,Oldsmobile Omega and Pontiac Phoenix? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove the hub nut, raise the front of the car and support it with jackstands. Then, remove the wheel and disconnect the brake line clip from the strut. Next, remove the disc brake caliper without disconnecting the brake inlet line. Make a mark on the cam bolt for the same camber adjustment upon installation. Remove the cam bolt and upper attaching bolt, and then remove the steering knuckle assembly from the strut bracket. Use a GM special tool or equivalent to remove the axle shaft from the transaxle, and remove the axle shaft from the hub and bearing assembly using the same tool. If the axle shaft needs an overhaul, have an automotive machine shop press the seal retainers. If replacing the axle shaft, also replace the steering knuckle seal. Loosely install the axle shaft to the steering knuckle and transaxle, and loosely attach the steering knuckle to the strut bracket. Install the brake caliper and then the axle shaft to the steering knuckle, securing it with the hub nut. Lower the car just enough to align the cam bolt with the alignment marks, and torque both the cam bolt and upper nut to specs. Install the axle shaft into the transaxle by tapping it until seated. Connect the brake line clip to the strut bracket, mount the wheel, and lower the car to the ground. Finally, torque the hub nut to specs.

Q:
How do you remove the rear axle for Buick Skylark,Oldsmobile Omega and Pontiac Phoenix? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove the rear axle, start by removing the rear springs and disconnecting the brake lines from the control arm attachment. Next, disconnect and cap the rigid brake lines from both rear brake cylinders and disconnect the right rear parking brake cable from the left rear parking brake cable. Then, disconnect the right rear and left rear parking brake cables from their brackets on the rear axle. Remove the bolts securing the rear parking brake cable guide to the underbody and allow the entire parking brake assembly to hang from the right rear backing plate. Remove the bolts securing the hub and bearing assembly to the rear axle and remove the assemblies along with the brake backing plates. With the assistance of another person, steady the rear axle on a jack and remove the bolts securing the control arm brackets to the body. Lower the rear axle and remove it from under the car. If replacing the rear axle, remove the control arm brackets from the control arms and install them on the new axle. Inspect the control arm bushings for any damage and replace if necessary. Prior to installation, ensure the lower edge of the control arms are on a true horizontal plane and adjust the control arm brackets to a 45° angle if needed. Install the rear axle in the reverse order of removal, making sure not to tighten the lower shock nuts and track arm nuts until the car is lowered and the full weight is on the suspension. Finally, bleed the brake system and adjust the parking brake.
