Periodically inspect the entire length of each battery cable for damage, cracked or burned insulation, and corrosion. Check the cable-to-terminal connections at the ends of the cables for cracks, loose wire strands, and corrosion. When replacing the cables, always disconnect the negative cable first and hook it up last. For batteries in the engine compartment, disconnect the negative cable from the engine block or body, and disconnect the positive cable from the starter solenoid. For batteries under the seat, remove the rear seat cushion and disconnect the negative cable from the battery terminal, body harness, and floor pan. Disconnect the positive cable from the positive and negative battery terminals, fuse and relay box, and front fuse and relay box. When installing new cables, clean the threads and apply a corrosion inhibitor or petroleum jelly. Attach the cable securely and ensure it reaches the battery without stretching.
