    Q:
How to remove and reinstall the Timing Chain and Variable Timing Sprocket in 2.3L four cylinder engine on Chevrolet Beretta? Posted by Customer
    A:
There are special tools which are required for this procedure; therefore, check it carefully before starting work. Firstly, disconnect the negative battery cable, taking precautions if the vehicle is equipped with the Delco Loc II audio system. Secondly, remove the coolant reservoir and engine lifting bracket at the drivebelt end. Next, remove vibration damper, upper and lower timing chain cover fasteners and detach the cover and gaskets from the housing. Slide oil slinger off crankshaft and temporarily reinstall vibration damper bolt for later use. Then rotate crankshaft clockwise to align camshaft sprocket's timing pin holes with housing holes by inserting 8 millimeters pins or bolts for alignment. Make sure that crankshaft sprocket mark lines up with engine block mark having keyway pointing up. Following removing timing chain guides, take away timing chain tensioner sleeve and spring in model through 1991 together with tensioner shoe after that. In addition, retract tensioner shoe using a wire on 1992 and later models. Then remove tensioner assembly followed by timing chain from sprockets beginning at exhaust camshaft sprocket. Remove camshaft sprockets as necessary ensuring proper identification using sealant on camshaft sprocket bolt threads. Also check alignment of camshaft and crankshaft sprockets to make sure correct valve timing.Slip timing chain over the sprockets; release intake camshaft alignment dowel pin; check timing marks.Adjust chain if needed.Install chain housing-to-block stud and tighten.Reset timing chain tensioner assembly to its "zero" position.Reinstall tensioner shoe, spring and sleeve.Remove alignment pins then rotate crankshaft clockwise two full turns aligning crankshaft timing mark with engine block mark and temporarily reinstalling eight millimeter alignment pins.Lastly, install remaining components in reverse order; check fluid levels; start engine and inspect for proper operation and leaks.

    Q:
How to remove and install the Timing Chain, Timing Cover and Variable Timing Sprocket on 4.3L V6 engine on GMC Sonoma? Posted by Customer
    A:
Disconnecting the negative battery cable is the first step in removal and installation of the Timing Cover. To remove, you will have to remove upper and lower fan shrouds, drive belt, cooling fan and water pump. The number four piston must be positioned at TDC on the compression stroke, then remove the drive belt pulley and crankshaft damper. If applicable, don't forget to take out the crankshaft position sensor and wiring harness nut. Loosen front oil pan nuts before removing cover bolts when separating Timing Cover from block and breaking gasket seal if necessary. Note that for some engines, the front cover may be made of composite material and should be replaced rather than resealed. Just inside the front cover, pull off crankshaft position sensor reluctor ring which is attached to a camshaft sprocket and chain assembly. For an old gasket material use a gasket scraper to scrape it off; cleaning lacquer thinner or acetone should be wiped over sealing surfaces of engine cover and block; inspecting flange condition of a cover is recommended. Make sure that when installing a Woodruff key line up coincides with both crankshaft sprocket's as well as balance shaft gears'. Use clean engine oil to lubricate the chain; put Loctite on camshaft sprocket bolt threads before installing them tightly or tighten them after installing using Loctite. Apply RTV sealant in U-shaped channel on bottom side of the cover check oil pan-to-block joints; also check whether there are any leaks between housing halves in place where they meet with each other in front of timing chain area that is why you need to apply RTV sealant between them too. Thin layer of RTV sealant should be spread over both sides of new gasket so that it can be positioned on engine block by dowel pins thus holding it firmly in place. Finally install Timing Cover and tighten bolts taking into account whether it is necessary to remove or pry down oil pan for access. Lastly, apply moly-base grease or clean engine oil onto the vibration damper hub's oil seal contact surface, put the damper on the crankshaft, and proceed with other remaining installation steps including using new O-ring for crankshaft position sensor.

    Q:
How to Replace and Regrind Timing Chain and Variable Timing Sprocket in V6 engine on Oldsmobile Cutlass? Posted by Customer
    A:
Remove the timing chain cover and temporarily install the harmonic balancer bolt and washer on the crankshaft. Turn the crankshaft to align the sprocket timing marks, then remove the harmonic bolt and washer without altering the sprocket positions, using a sharp tap on the wrench handle if necessary. Next, remove the front crankshaft oil slinger and the camshaft sprocket bolts, followed by the oil pan. Use two large screwdrivers to carefully pry the camshaft sprocket and then the crankshaft sprocket forward alternately until the camshaft sprocket is free, then remove both the camshaft sprocket and chain, working the crankshaft sprocket off the crankshaft. If the chain is not stretched and parts are to be reused, clean the timing chain, sprockets, and crankshaft oil slinger thoroughly in the appropriate solvent. If the engine was not rotated while the chain and sprockets were off, install them with the timing marks perfectly aligned as they were upon removal. If the engine was rotated, temporarily install the sprockets and turn the crankshaft until the number one piston is at Top Dead Center, ensuring the camshaft 'O' mark is straight down and aligned with both shafts. Remove the sprockets and assemble the timing chain on both sprockets, sliding the chain assembly onto the shafts with the 'O' marks together and aligned with the sprocket hubs. Assemble the oil slinger on the crankshaft with the concave side facing the front of the engine, then install the camshaft sprocket bolts and torque-tighten to specifications. Finally, install the oil pan using a new gasket and then the timing chain cover.
