Q:
How to remove and install the oil seal and Timing Cover on a Cadillac Fleetwood? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove and install the oil seal on a 4.5L or 4.9L engine, start by disconnecting the negative battery cable and removing the serpentine belt. Raise and support the vehicle, then remove the right front tire and air deflector. Loosen and reposition the heater bypass line. Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt and use a wheel puller to remove the pulley from the crankshaft. Pry the old oil seal from the timing case cover and discard it. To install the new seal, clean the mounting surface and lubricate the seal with engine oil. Use an oil seal installation tool to drive the new seal into the timing case cover until it seats. Lubricate the hub and seal with EP lubricant, then position the damper onto the crankshaft, aligning the key slot. Use an installer tool to tighten the damper onto the crankshaft. Install the heater bypass line, air deflector, and tire. Finally, install the serpentine belt and reconnect the negative battery cable. For a 4.6L engine, start by disconnecting the negative battery cable and removing the harmonic balancer. Release tension from the accessory drive belt and raise the vehicle. Remove the right front wheel, splash shields, and brace between the oil pan and transmission case. Install a flywheel holder tool and remove the balancer bolt. Support the engine cradle and remove the bolts from the right side. Lower the cradle and install a pilot tool into the crankshaft. Use a puller tool to remove the harmonic balancer. Pry the old oil seal out of the bore and discard it. To install the new seal, clean the mounting surface and lubricate the seal with engine oil. Use seal installer and harmonic balancer installation tools to install the new seal. Position the balancer to the crankshaft and use the installation tool to install it. Tighten the balancer bolt and reinstall the engine cradle bolts. Reconnect the suspension position sensors and install the oil pan-to-transmission brace. Install the splash shields and right front wheel. Lower the vehicle and install the accessory drive belt. Connect the negative battery cable.
