The procedure for replacing parts in early-model SI type alternators is as follows: First, remove the alternator from the vehicle. Then, scribe or paint marks on the front and rear end frame housings to aid in reassembly. Next, remove the four through-bolts holding the end frames together and separate them. Remove the bolts holding the stator to the rear end frame and detach the stator. Remove the nuts attaching the diode trio to the rectifier bridge and remove the trio. Remove the screws attaching the resistor, Voltage Regulator, and brush holder to the end frame, and detach the brush holder. Remove the brushes from the brush holder by slipping off the brush retainer and remove the springs. To reinstall, start by installing the brushes in the brush holder, starting with the brush closest to the end frame. Use a paper clip to hold the brushes in place while completing reassembly. The paper clip should not be removed until the end frames are bolted together.

Remove the alternator from the vehicle. Scribe a match mark on the front and rear end frame housings of the alternator to facilitate reassembly. Remove the four throughbolts holding the front and rear end frames together, then separate the end frames. Remove the nuts holding the stator to the rectifier bridge and separate the stator from the end frame. Remove the screw attaching the diode trio to the end frame and remove the trio. Remove the screws retaining the brush holder and resistor (if equipped) to the end frame and remove the brush holder. Remove the voltage regulator. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure, noting the following. When installing the brush holder assembly, press the brushes into the holder and insert a straight section of wire, such as a straightened paper clip, through the rear of the end frame and through the holes in the brush holder to hold the brushes in while reassembly is completed. The paper clip should not be removed until the front and rear end frames have been bolted together.
