Q:
How to remove and replace an extension housing oil seal that is causing oil leaks? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove an extension housing oil seal that is causing oil leaks, the vehicle must be raised and supported securely on jackstands. The seal is located at the rear of the transmission where the driveshaft is attached, and if it is leaking, transmission lubricant will be built up on the front of the driveshaft and may be dripping from the rear of the transmission. The driveshaft must be removed, and the oil seal can then be carefully pried out of the rear of the transmission using a seal removal tool or large screwdriver. It is important not to damage the splines on the transmission output shaft. To install a new oil seal, a seal driver or large deep socket can be used to drive it into the bore squarely and ensure it is completely seated. The splines of the transmission output shaft and the outside of the driveshaft yoke should be lubricated with lightweight grease before reinstalling the driveshaft, being careful not to damage the lip of the new seal.
