Detach the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the front bank catalytic converter. Remove the starter heat shield mounting fastener, then remove the heat shield. Disconnect the wiring from the starter. Unscrew the starter mounting bolts and remove the starter. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the starter mounting bolts securely, then reconnect the cable to the negative terminal of the battery.

Lighten the starter mounting bolts securely.

The nut should be removed and the battery cable should be disconnected from the B+ terminal.

Detach the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. On 2.4L engine models, remove the power brake booster pump fasteners and secure the pump out of the way. If you're working on 3.0L and 3.6L models, remove the front catalytic converter. Disconnect the wiring from the starter. Remove the torque converter cover, then unscrew the starter mounting bolts and remove the starter. Installation is the reverse of removal. Be sure to tighten the starter mounting bolts securely, then reconnect the cable to the negative terminal of the battery.

When a malfunction occurs in the starting circuit, it's important not to immediately assume that the starter is the cause of the problem. First, check the following items: Ensure that the battery cable clamps are clean and securely attached to the battery, inspect the condition of the battery cables and replace any damaged ones, test the battery's condition, examine the starter solenoid wiring and connections, verify the tightness of the starter mounting bolts, confirm that the transmission is in the correct position (PARK or NEUTRAL for automatic transaxles or clutch pedal pressed for manual transaxles), and assess the adjustment of the Transmission Range (TR) switch. If the starter fails to operate when the ignition switch is turned to START, check for battery voltage to the solenoid by connecting a test light or voltmeter to the starter solenoid's switched terminal while an assistant turns the ignition switch to START. If voltage is absent, investigate the starting system circuit. If voltage is present but the starter doesn't engage, remove and bench test the starter after removing it from the engine compartment. If the starter turns over slowly, assess the starter cranking voltage and battery current draw, ensuring they meet specified values. If not, replace the starter and consider battery condition and cold-cranking rating. Lastly, if the starter receives voltage but doesn't activate, remove and inspect the starter/solenoid assembly on the bench, checking for proper operation of the solenoid and starter components.
