Q:
How to check and adjust the tension on the air conditioning compressor belt for Buick Skylark,Oldsmobile Omega and Pontiac Phoenix? Posted by Customer
A:
The air conditioning compressor is a belt-driven component which in the V6 engine is driven directly off of the crankshaft, while in the L4 engine it is driven off of the water pump pulley. It's crucial to maintain the proper tension on this belt to avoid excessive sideward strain on the units shafts and bearings. To check the tension, disconnect the negative battery cable then find the longest stretch of the belt and move it back and forth to gauge its slack. The belt should only move about f-in (13 mm). If it moves more, it needs to be adjusted by loosening the compressor's adjusting bolts and mounting bolts and moving the compressor away from the engine. Tighten the bolts and recheck the adjustment. If the NC compressor drivebelt is frayed or cracked, it should be replaced. On L4 engines, remove the power steering drivebelt, if equipped, and then the generator belt. On VG engines, remove the generator belt and then the power steering pump drive belt, if equipped. Loosen the NC compressor's adjusting bolts, and move the compressor toward the engine until the belt is loose enough to remove from the pulleys. Install a new belt over the NC compressor, water pump and crankshaft(V6) and adjust and tighten. Finally, reinstall, adjust and tighten the generator and power steering pump belts.

Q:
How can you check the tension of each drivebelt for the 1985 Buick Skylark? Posted by Customer
A:
The tension of each drivebelt can be checked by pushing on it at a distance halfway between the pulleys. The amount of deflection should be ¾ inch for belts with a pulley center distance of 7 to 11 inches, and ½ inch for belts with a pulley center distance of 12 to 16 inches.

Q:
What is the purpose of the generator belt and how should its tension be maintained for Buick Skylark,Oldsmobile Omega and Pontiac Phoenix? Posted by Customer
A:
The generator is a belt-driven component that is driven directly off of the crankshaft. Maintaining the proper tension on this belt is crucial to prevent excessive strain on the belt, as well as the generator's shafts and bearings. To check the tension of the belt, find the longest stretch and move it back and forth to gauge its slack. The distance it can be moved should be about ½-in (13 mm). If it moves more than this, the belt should be adjusted. Loosen the generator's adjusting and mounting bolts, move the generator away from the engine to adjust the belt, and then tighten the bolts. If the belt is frayed or cracked, it should be replaced. On L4 engines, remove the power steering pump belt if equipped. Loosen the generator's adjusting and mounting bolts, move the generator toward the engine to loosen the belt, and then install a new belt over the pulleys. Adjust and tighten as necessary. Finally, if removed, reinstall the power steering pump belt on L4 engines.
